YOUR RIGHTS
Locksmith is a licensed profession in New York State. Licensed locksmiths undergo fingerprinting and background check by the Department of Consumer Affairs in order to keep consumers safe. Knowing your consumer rights can help you avoid being taken advantage of when you are most vulnerable. You might find the following useful when searching for or using a locksmith:
Check Locksmith License
If you are looking to hire a locksmith to work on your home or business, you can validate that the business appears on the New York Department of Consumer Affairs website. You should verify the technician’s license to ensure they are certified and qualified to perform the work.
Find An Accredited Locksmith
Find a reliable and trusted professional on the Better Business Bureau Be mindful, that just like Google, BBB lists some unaccredited business of questionable quality! Look for the business bearing the Accredited Business Seal.
Know the Law
You can protect yourself from scammers by being familiar with your legal rights as a consumer of locksmithing services. The Subchapter 15 of the NYC Administrative Code guides the license requirements and behavioral standards of locksmiths. As a consumer, you have the right to request that a locksmith displays his locksmith license. Should a technician refuse to display credentials, you have the right to request that they leave your premises. Always be suspect of supposed professionals who refuse to share their credentials. Your safety is in your hands.
Report a Locksmith
If you had the misfortune of hiring a locksmith of questionable character, you can file a complaint about the individual and company who worked on your lock. The New York City will investigate the complaint and take the necessary action against the entity that breaks the NYC locksmithing laws.
File a Marketplace Complaint
Better Business Bureau assists consumers with marketplace issues. If you have an unproductive interaction with a business, you can file a complaint against a business, or share an experience about a business and seek BBB’s intervention to remediate the complaint. Your report helps to protect other consumers from engaging with unethical locksmiths.
